The sapwood and the heartwood are sharply separated. The sapwood is yellowish-white, while the heartwood is light reddish-yellow. Characteristic for Swiss Stone Pine are the numerous firm adnate reddish brown knots, which are easy to saw and plane. They give the rustic Swiss Stone Pine-furniture a unmistakable character. The wood is very soft, light weight, and fine and has a long-lasting pleasant resin-smell. The texture is striped or has "T" figuration caused from the build-up of annual rings, in view of the knots-enrichment especially decorative and it has a characteristic smell. |
