Glosiness Clarification

Glosiness Clarification

Hi, I'm currently using Maya + Vray and just need confirmation on the Glossiness percentage/setting.

Is 100% Glosiness in a material = a setting of 1.0 in Vray? Or does 100% Glosiness in the Vray settings = 0.0?

In Vray the higher the number, the sharper the reflection gets so I think the settings are inverted so 100% = a setting 0.0 but just need some clarification on this matter. *Confused*

Kiernan

Hi Kiernan, yes, our 100%

Hi Kiernan,

yes, our 100% would basically translate to 1.0 in Vray, which should produce a perfectly sharp specular highlight. But the maps we provide are specularity maps, which control the strength of the highlight. For most natural materials there exists a inverse correlation between highlight strength and hightlight diffusion (strong HL = sharp HL / weak HL = diffuse HL). Therefore it is possible to put an *inverted* specularity (or reflectivity) map into the glossiness channel. Along with some level adjustments this usually produces good results.

But keep in mind that the settings we give to our textures should only be unterstood as a recommendation; as something give you a basic idea of how a map is indented to be used. You may use this value as a stating point for your own experiments.
