Frequently Asked Questions - About Arroway Textures

How are your textures made?

Although our textures are built from photographic material, they are not simple photographs of surfaces and materials. Ther are up to 100 single photographs needed for every texture. All these pictures have to be stitched together to get one really high resolution image. Many further steps are necessary to remove perspective distortion, correct lighting and to eliminate the seams. Custom-built software is used to extract the extended map information (bump, specularity etc.). Finally every map is post-processed by hand. Usually, it takes more than a day and several gigabyte of data to complete one multi-layered texture.

We continuously work on new techniques to perfect our workflow and to maximize the quality of our products.

Why are you not providing normal maps?

Normal maps contain basically the same information as a bump map, only in a different form. Where a bump map defines the height of a relief at a certain point, a normal map defines the surface angle relative to the triangle normal. Both types can be converted into each other easily, for example with the NVIDIA Normal Map filter for Adobe® Photoshop®.

Arn't the downloadable textures large enough for most purposes? Why are you giving them away for free?

Although other vendors still do this, we see no point in trying to sell low-res textures (we consider everything below 1000px x 1000px as low-res).

When will your next release be ready?

Hard to say. Although we now work full-time on new texture packs, it's hard to predict when we will actually have enough material for a release. Our experiences show that it always takes longer than initially expected. So we don't officially announce new products before their release.

What rendering software did you use for your demos?

We're using Autodesk® 3ds Max® with Cebas® finalRender®.

What are the terms of use for the commercial textures?

ARROWAY TEXTURES

I would like to use your textures for an open-source/non-commercial project...

We always like to support free projects - talk to us!

What's the difference between the textures on the disks and the free downloads?

Resolution! The free version has only about 1/10th of the resolution of the original texture, which amounts to only 1% of the total pixel mass. For example, the free version has a resolution of 600px x 600px, whereas the original map is 6000px x 6000px.

Do you provide ready-made materials?

There are no ready-made materials for specific software applications available from us at the moment. The reason is that we neither want to favor a single renderer, nor are we able to provide materials for all of even only the major available rendering applications.

So you will need to adjust the material settings manually, which - btw - is what we recommend anyway. Tweaking of parameters and the maps themselves allows for a broad range of possible surface characteristics with the same set of textures.

I found your products on a warez site...

Well, if you feel like you just HAVE TO do something about this, please send us the link. But we try not to get too worked up about 'the scene'. Real profesionals don't use illegal textures. All those kiddies, who just want to play with 3D rendering for a while, wouldn't buy our products anyway. And who knows, some of them may become customers some day.

Will there ever be an 'Edition Two'?

Probably not. Into edition-1 went many of the textures we had made for ourselves up to that point. As this was our first product, it provided us with the opportunity to get a better idea of the demand for high-res textures, which, as it turned out, is much bigger that we thought initially.

Now we believe that it is in the interest of our customers to have a more structured and theme-based product line. But there will definitely be more volume two's and three's in the near future.
