Keep bump subtle

The use of a bump map for a shiny parquet floor might not be as obvious as for a rough wooden floor. But even the smoothest looking parquet floor is not perfectly even. There are always tiny flaws and fine relief details such as seams. Therefore, a bump map can make a real improvement to a more realistic look. However, there's one important rule for the use of bump maps: Keep the effect subtle!

In most cases, the bump map should NOT produce a visible relief, but rather slightly modify the way, light is reflected by the surface.
